For my first post I thought I would share some images from my group trip to New York with PAFA. I traveled with my MFA class to visit Syzygy also known as the JoAnn Gonzalez-Hickey Collection of works on paper. They are currently showing the ten-year retrospective show.
Syzygy is a private collection of works on paper compiled by JoAnn based on 10 defining guidelines. The first is, “If it feels like a drawing it is a drawing.” Each of the students was able to select a work from the collection to look at more closely. You can see us taking it all in below.
We were asked to formulate a written and visual response to the piece we chose. We each made a 10 pieces series as a reaction. I chose The Cartoon Network & From the Center by Lori Ellison. (Pictured Below)
Lori’s work is roughly letter sized and made with a ball point pen. I decided to make 10 smaller drawings using the same method while exploring various ways of mark making and using shape to create variation in tone. Each of my drawings is roughly 1/4 the size of Lori’s.
